Syria launches detainee exchange in Sweida under Red Cross oversight PHOTO

26 February 2026 18:25

Syrian Internal Security Forces, together with the Military Police, began transferring 61 detainees to Sweida on February 26 as part of a coordinated exchange that will result in the release of 25 individuals held by the so-called “National Guard” militia in the province, officials confirmed.

Qutaiba Azzam, Sweida’s media relations director, noted that the detainees were being moved to the al-Matouna checkpoint in the northern countryside of the province to complete the agreed exchange, Caliber.Az reports via Syrian media.

The operation, which involves freeing 25 captives held by the militia, is being conducted under the supervision of the International Committee of the Red Cross to guarantee adherence to humanitarian standards, Azzam added.

This exchange forms part of broader government efforts to resolve issues surrounding detainees and captives in Sweida through a mutually agreed mechanism, aimed at easing tensions and strengthening stability across the province.
