Tesla's 13% decline in January-March deliveries marks historic low

02 April 2025 21:18

Tesla, the American electric vehicle giant, has reported a nearly 13 per cent decline in vehicle deliveries during the first quarter of 2025, reaching a total of 336,681 electric cars.

This marks the company's worst quarterly performance in its history. This is linked to the modernisation of production for the renewed Model Y and dissatisfaction with Elon Musk's political activity, which have led to criticism of the billionaire and protests against him and Tesla in particular, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

The sales of its more affordable models, the Model 3 and Model Y, accounted for the majority of deliveries, totaling 323,800 units. The remaining models, including the Model S and Model X, accounted for just 12,881 vehicles. Wall Street analysts had initially projected deliveries of around 378,000 vehicles for the quarter, signaling a significant miss in expectations. In addition to the drop in deliveries, Tesla’s production also suffered, falling by over 16 per cent to 362,615 units in January-March.

The company indicated that its full financial results for the first quarter will be released on April 22. Tesla's stock fell by 2.4 per cent in trading on April 2, and the company’s market capitalization has declined by 35 per cent since the beginning of the year, now sitting at $863 billion. In comparison, the Nasdaq Composite index has dropped by approximately 10 per cent during the same period.

Protests against Elon Musk take place under the movement Tesla Takedown. Participants organise demonstrations at Tesla locations worldwide, urging car owners to sell their Tesla vehicles and shares in the company. Musk has also faced criticism from Tesla investors. Musk acknowledged that he has been struggling to manage his business alongside his political work in Washington. However, on March 20, he encouraged Tesla shareholders to hold onto their shares despite the challenging times. Musk remains the world's richest person, with a net worth of $381.5 billion.
