Thousands gather at unauthorised rave on French military site
French authorities have raised alarm after a large unauthorised rave took place on a military training ground in central France, citing serious risks linked to unexploded ordnance and potential explosions.
The gathering occurred early on May 1 near the city of Bourges, in the Cher region. The site was considered highly dangerous due to the possible presence of leftover military munitions, according to French media.
Authorities estimated that by the morning, around 2,300 vehicles had arrived, bringing roughly 8,000 people to the area. Organizers, communicating indirectly, indicated they were expecting attendance to rise as high as 30,000. However, officials noted that sound equipment had not yet been installed and the event itself had not formally begun.
Local authorities issued an order banning the so-called “free party.” Prefect Philippe Le Moing-Surzur warned participants of the risks, urging them not to light fires, dig into the ground, or handle any objects found on the surface.
A crisis coordination centre has been established at the prefecture to manage emergency services in case of incidents such as fires or explosions.
Officials also reported the circulation of a fake prefectural decree on social media, allegedly shared by organisers under the name “Teknival de Bourges.” The message attempted to link the gathering to protests against proposed legislation in the French parliament that would impose stricter penalties on illegal rave events.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as they seek to disperse the crowd and prevent potential accidents.
