Trump declares May 8 Victory Day for WWII
U.S. President Donald Trump has proclaimed May 8, 2026, as a national day commemorating Victory Day for World War II, honouring the Allied victory over Nazi Germany and the sacrifices made by American forces during the war.
In a proclamation issued by the White House, Trump said the United States was celebrating a “monumental triumph over tyranny and evil in Europe,” achieved through the efforts of American troops and Allied forces. He described May 8, 1945, as a decisive moment in the history of freedom, marking the collapse of Nazi Germany, Caliber.Az reports.
The proclamation highlighted major World War II campaigns involving U.S. forces, including the Normandy landings and the Battle of the Bulge. Trump praised the role of American soldiers and civilians, saying their sacrifices helped defeat Nazi Germany and later contributed to Allied victory over Imperial Japan.
Trump noted that more than 250,000 Americans died fighting Nazi Germany and said their sacrifice demonstrated that freedom “must be fiercely defended both at home and abroad.” He also paid tribute to the victims of atrocities committed under National Socialism during the war.
The president linked the anniversary to the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence, saying the United States would continue strengthening its armed forces to preserve national sovereignty and defend liberty.
