Trump hints at revoking exemptions for Russian oil exports
US President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington may soon move to revoke sanctions relief measures currently allowing certain Russian oil exports, suggesting that the administration could tighten restrictions on Moscow in the near future.
Speaking during a meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France, Trump was asked by reporters whether he planned to strengthen sanctions against Russia, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
Trump said that the United States would soon have an opportunity to tighten restrictions, noting that oil exports were already flowing. He explained that the sanctions had previously been eased because Washington did not want to disrupt oil supplies, but added that circumstances could soon allow for a change in policy.
The remarks appeared to signal a potential shift in US policy toward Russian energy exports, which have been subject to a range of sanctions and exemptions since the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine.
When pressed on whether he was referring specifically to licenses issued by the US Treasury Department that provide exemptions and sanctions relief for certain shipments of Russian oil, Trump confirmed that such measures could eventually be withdrawn.
“Yes, at some point,” the US president replied.
