Trump pressures House Republicans to avert looming government shutdown
US President Donald Trump has issued a public call urging House Republicans to back a temporary government funding measure, in a bid to stave off a federal shutdown set to begin on October 1.
Posting on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump implored GOP lawmakers to support the short-term spending bill currently under negotiation, warning of the political fallout that could result from a failure to keep the government open, Caliber.Az reports.
“Tomorrow, House Republicans are taking a very important vote to pass a clean temporary funding bill. The Leader of the Democrats, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, wants to shut the Government down. Republicans want the Government to stay open. Every House Republican should unify, and vote yes!” the post by the US president reads.
Despite holding only a slim majority in the House of Representatives, Republican leaders are pushing forward with a continuing resolution that would extend federal funding through November 21. The proposal faces stiff opposition from Democratic leadership and dissent within Republican ranks, particularly from members aligned with the party’s more hardline fiscal wing.
Republican leadership in both chambers of Congress declared that they will not support Democratic calls for the immediate extension of federal health care subsidies, setting the stage for a potential showdown as the September 30 government funding deadline looms.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune framed the standoff as a test of Democratic resolve, asserting that the opposition party “has a choice to make” in the coming days. “They can collaborate with Republicans to keep the government open,” Thune said, “or they can allow a shutdown, with all the consequences that would entail for the American people.”
