Trump’s envoy advocates for diplomatic engagement with Russia to end war in Ukraine
Keith Kellogg, US President Donald Trump’s Special Representative, has called for a significant shift in the United States' approach to the war in Ukraine.
In a speech delivered in Washington, Kellogg argued that isolating Russia has become an ineffective strategy that ultimately undermines US national security, Caliber.Az reports via Ukrainian media.
Kellogg stressed that the current US policy of prolonged isolation toward Russia is no longer sustainable and poses serious risks to American security interests. He contended that, in order to bring an end to the ongoing conflict, the US must engage in a strategic reset of its relations with Russia. He explained that avoiding direct diplomatic engagement with Russia is a mistake, and that the previous administration's approach of disengagement had led to negative consequences.
“The refusal to engage with both allies and adversaries is crucial in diplomacy,” Kellogg remarked, emphasizing the need for a more balanced and pragmatic strategy. He also pointed out that successful diplomacy, especially during wartime, requires leaders to actively engage with one another and leverage all available diplomatic tools to resolve conflicts. For the US president, Kellogg added, the refusal to engage directly with Russia has had significant national security ramifications.
Kellogg further argued that a more effective strategy would involve combining diplomatic pressure with credible deterrence in order to pursue peace and avoid protracted conflict. He highlighted that the current strategy of isolating Russia while the war in Ukraine continues is neither viable nor effective.
