Trump slams EU fine on X, warns Europe “going in very bad directions”
U.S. President Donald Trump voiced his dissatisfaction with the European Commission’s decision to fine Elon Musk’s social media platform X €120 million, calling the regulatory move “nasty” and expressing concern over Europe’s direction.
“That's a nasty one. Elon has not called me to ask for help in that one. But no, it's a tough thing. I don't think it's right,” Caliber.Az reports, transcribing Trump's speech delivered at a White House press conference on December 8.
The president added that he would "get a full report" on the matter.
He also warned that Europe should be cautious: "Europe has to be very careful. They're doing a lot of things. We want to keep Europe Europe. Europe is going in some bad directions. It's very bad. Very bad for the people. We don't want Europe to change so much. They're going in some very bad directions."
On December 5, 2025, the European Commission (EC) imposed a €120 million fine on X (formerly Twitter), marking the first enforcement action under the bloc’s new digital regulatory framework, the Digital Services Act (DSA). This action reportedly stems from a two-year investigation into X's compliance with transparency and user protection rules, highlighting ongoing transatlantic tensions over digital regulation.
