Trump threatens escalation if Hamas fails to release hostages by inauguration

17 December 2024 12:18

On December 16 president-elect Donald Trump reiterated his warning that "all hell is going to break out" if Hamas does not release its hostages by January 20, the day he is set to take office.

He said that he had a "very good talk" with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Speaking during a press conference at his Palm Beach resort in Florida, Trump referred to the call as a "recap," emphasizing the deadline for the hostages’ return.

"As you know, I gave a warning that if these hostages aren't back home by that date, all hell is going to break out," he said.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas militants launched an attack on Israel, killing 1,200 people and kidnapping over 250, including Israeli-American dual nationals, according to Israeli sources.

More than 100 hostages have since been freed through negotiations or Israeli military operations. It is believed that roughly half of the remaining hostages are still alive.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has sent senior aides to the region to broker a ceasefire deal, which has long been sought by international parties.

To recap, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had offered a $5 million reward for each Israeli captive released from Gaza, along with a safe exit for anyone who helps secure their freedom. Netanyahu made the announcement during a visit to Gaza, where he was shown the Netzarim Corridor, a key military route dividing northern and southern Gaza.

"Whoever brings us a hostage will find a safe way out for themselves and their family. We will also give $5 million for every hostage," he stated.

Israel estimates that 101 Israelis are still being held by Hamas, with around a third of them believed to have died. Netanyahu’s offer comes amid ongoing protests in Israel, where families of captives demand a ceasefire to secure the release of their loved ones.

Netanyahu has insisted that only military action will achieve the release of all hostages and that Israel’s military campaign will continue until this goal is met.
