Trump threatens EU with 35% tariffs, declares “NATO leaders do whatever I want”
US President Donald Trump issued sharp warnings to the European Union and made bold declarations about his influence over NATO.
Trump cautioned that the European Union could face tariffs of up to 35% if it fails to fulfill its commitment to invest $600 billion in the United States—an agreement he claims was essential to reducing tariffs, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
“They gave me $600 billion – a gift, not a loan – and that’s why I cut their tariffs from 30% to 15%. They’ve taken advantage of us for many years. Now it’s time for them to pay,” Trump reportedly said.
As part of the broader transatlantic trade talks, the Trump administration had previously slashed tariffs on European goods, contingent on this large-scale investment package. The president's remarks, however, signal a readiness to reimpose or increase those tariffs if the EU fails to deliver.
In the same interview, Trump criticized the Swiss Prime Minister, saying that she "didn't want to listen" to his arguments.
