Turkish president plans phone call with Putin on November 24
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said he expects to hold a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on November 24.
The president made the remarks at a press conference in South Africa during the G20 summit, per Haber Global.
“This week, I hosted Mr. [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy. Tomorrow, I will have a phone conversation with Mr. Putin. Of course, during bilateral meetings here [at the G20 summit], we discussed the war between Russia and Ukraine in detail, assessed the situation, and considered what can be done. We have focused persistently on how peace can be achieved,” he said.
Since the outbreak of the war, Türkiye has maintained relatively balanced relations with both Russia and Ukraine — a rare position that gives it leverage as a mediator.
Erdogan has repeatedly offered to host peace talks, and in May 2025 he expressed willingness to resume negotiations in Istanbul.
The Istanbul talks on July 23 marked the third round of direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine since May 2025, following a pause in formal talks since 2022. However, this round also failed to reach an agreement on a ceasefire.
