Two injured as explosive object hits Jordan's Irbid
Two civilians were injured in Jordan’s northern city of Irbid after an “explosive object” fell in the area, marking what appears to be the country’s first casualties linked to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
State broadcaster Al-Mamlaka TV aired footage of the aftermath, showing a damaged building surrounded by emergency crews and cordoned off by security forces, Caliber.Az reports via US media.
The Jordanian Armed Forces issued a statement on June 13, emphasising that the country would not tolerate any breaches of its airspace under any circumstances. According to the military, the Jordanian Air Force and air defence systems successfully intercepted and shot down several missiles and drones that had crossed into Jordanian airspace that day.
The incident came amid a rapid escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran. In the early hours of June 13, Israel carried out an unprecedented airstrike campaign against Iran, hitting key nuclear sites and killing senior military figures. In response, Iran launched several retaliatory strikes targeting Israeli territory.
Following the initial Israeli strikes, Jordan temporarily shut down its airspace as a precautionary measure. However, according to the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission, flights had resumed by the morning of June 14.
Jordan shares a long and sensitive border with Israel, making it a strategically significant player in the regional fallout from the conflict.
