Warsaw reviews extradition request for Russian archaeologist to Ukraine PHOTO
Polish authorities are considering a request from Ukraine to extradite Russian archaeologist Aleksandr B., who was detained on December 11 at a Warsaw hotel by officers of the Internal Security Agency of Poland.
Ukrainian authorities allege that Aleksandr B., while employed by the Hermitage Museum, conducted illegal archaeological excavations in Crimea, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
The extradition request has been submitted to the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office. Investigators will first assess its formal compliance with the 1957 European Extradition Convention. Following this, they will examine whether any legal obstacles exist that could prevent the extradition, including the presence of a parallel criminal investigation in Poland or the granting of asylum.
The final decision on whether to extradite the archaeologist to Ukraine will rest with the court.
