UK intelligence service launches darknet platform to recruit agents
The United Kingdom’s Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), commonly known as MI6, is developing a specialised darknet platform aimed at recruiting individuals with access to classified information in Russia and other countries deemed hostile, Caliber.Az reports, citing British media.
The platform, which will use the secure messaging service Silent Courier, is intended to allow potential recruits to contact MI6 safely and anonymously. Sir Richard Moore, the outgoing head of the SIS, said the agency is particularly focused on Russia, citing increasing threats against the UK and the growing likelihood of future conflict.
MI6 has outlined strict security instructions for users of the system, including guidance on VPN use and “clean” electronic devices, to ensure anonymity. The agency also plans to officially present the project on its YouTube channel.
The initiative comes as traditional recruitment methods in adversarial states become increasingly risky, highlighting MI6’s adaptation to modern digital intelligence operations.
