UK pime minister warns of strain in global alliances
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said that international alliances are facing “more tension than there should be,” as he pointed to growing geopolitical strains during a political summit in Yerevan on May 4.
“We cannot deny that some of the alliances that we have come to rely on are not in the place we would want them to be. There is more tension in the alliances than there should be, and it's very important that we therefore face up to this," Starmer said, Sky News reports.
The remarks were widely interpreted as an acknowledgment of growing friction in transatlantic relations, including with the United States.
Starmer also stressed the need for increased European defence spending, arguing that the continent has “gotten behind over many years,” and calling for a stronger European role within NATO.
