UK working with allies to support shipping through Strait of Hormuz
The United Kingdom is working with its allies on several options to support commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz amid Iranian threats, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer said after talks with the leaders of Italy and Germany.
Following meetings with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni late evening on March 9, Downing Street stated that the leaders agreed on the “vital importance of freedom of navigation" through the Strait and "agreed to work closely together in the coming days in the face of Iranian threats,” Caliber.Az reports via Western media.
"We're working with our allies on a range of options to support commercial shipping through the Strait as the threat picture develops," the spokesperson told reporters.
The current de facto closure of the Strait began on 28 February 2026, immediately after the United States and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury — a massive joint airstrike campaign against Iran.
