Ukraine’s Security Service (SSU) has thwarted attempts by Russian intelligence to collect data on the country’s defensive infrastructure in the west.

According to the SSU’s Telegram channel, a Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) agent was detained in Khmelnytskyi while spying on Ukrainian military bases and preparing so-called “video traps” to guide attacks, Caliber.Az reports.

The investigation revealed that the woman was assigned to install disguised cameras near buildings that might house Ukrainian Defence Forces units.Once activated, the devices were to provide Russian intelligence with remote access, allowing real-time monitoring and adjustment of airstrikes.

SBU operatives intercepted the agent during her first attempt to set up the spy equipment near a military site.

The suspect, a 60-year-old Khmelnytskyi resident, had previously drawn the attention of Russian intelligence during trips to Russia before the full-scale war. Earlier this year, an FSB officer contacted her via Telegram and offered cooperation in exchange for assistance with travel to Russia.

Following recruitment, she purchased a camera online and rented a space on the top floor of an office building, posing it as a cosmetic studio. The device with remote access for the FSB was installed on the windowsill.

During searches, SSU officers seized the spy equipment and a smartphone used to coordinate with her FSB handler.

The woman has been charged with “state treason committed under martial law” and is currently in custody. If convicted, she faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
