Ukrainian FM rules out possibility of signing agreement similar to Moscow Peace Treaty
22 August 2023 16:12
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba rejected the possibility of signing a peace agreement with Russia in exchange for giving up part of its territory.
He made the statement during an online lecture on the future of Europe at the Menendez Pelayo International University in the Spanish city of Santander, El Diario reports.
The foreign policy chief highly appreciated the support that Kyiv received in the fight against Russia. In his opinion, this happened partly due to the fact that "the world has drawn conclusions from past mistakes."
Therefore, he noted, Ukraine "will not sign a peace agreement similar to the agreement with Finland" of 1940 – the Moscow Peace Treaty, under which the country ceded part of its territory to the Soviet Union.
Kuleba added that having survived the invasion, gained victories in various battles and enlisted support, Ukraine "has every chance to get other peaceful conditions" than it was as a result of the Soviet-Finnish, Russian-Georgian war in 2008 or the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014.
