Ukrainian officials hail Trump’s accelerated tariff threat against Russia

28 July 2025 18:39

Ukrainian officials have welcomed US President Donald Trump’s decision to accelerate the implementation of secondary tariffs against Russia, viewing it as a powerful signal to Moscow amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, and Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation under the National Security and Defense Council, both issued statements applauding Trump’s tougher stance, Caliber.Az reports via Ukrainian media

"Thanks to President Trump for standing firm and delivering a clear message of peace through strength," Yermak wrote, emphasising Ukraine’s appreciation for what he described as Washington’s resolute approach.

Trump had previously given Russian President Vladimir Putin a 50-day deadline to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine, warning of 100% secondary tariffs if Moscow failed to comply. However, Trump has now signaled that the timeline will be shortened, citing what he described as the predictability of Russia’s response.

"Putin respects only power — and that message is loud and clear. This is a principle fully shared by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy," Yermak added.

Kovalenko echoed the sentiment, stating that Trump’s revised deadline reflects an understanding in Washington that Putin has no genuine intention of ending the war.

Trump’s planned secondary tariffs are expected to target Russia’s trade partners, potentially pressuring them to halt purchases of Russian oil and gas.
