UN restores Iran arms embargo, sanctions over nuclear program Tehran and Washington reacted
The United Nations has resumed the arms embargo and other sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program, following a process initiated by three European countries.
According to Reuters, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the determination of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, noting that six UN resolutions have been reinstated. These resolutions prohibit uranium enrichment in Iran, restore restrictions on the country’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, and reimpose limits on arms trade.
However, Iran strongly opposed the reinstatement of sanctions. The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the actions of the U.S. and the “EU trio” (the UK, Germany, and France) foster confrontation rather than diplomacy and wrongly assume that the restored UN resolutions will serve as an effective tool of pressure.
“Tehran will resolutely defend its rights and national interests and will respond appropriately to any act aimed at violating the rights and interests of the Iranian people,” the ministry emphasised.
