US accuses Assad regime of ignoring UN Security Council resolutions
The US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, criticized the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria for disregarding UN resolutions and refusing to engage in negotiations.
"It is the Assad regime that has ignored Security Council resolutions and rejected coming to the table," Thomas-Greenfield stated during a news conference marking the US's assumption of the UN Security Council presidency for December, taking over from the UK, Caliber.Az reports per Turkish media.
While expressing that the US has long sought peace talks, she also voiced concern over recent developments in Syria, particularly after renewed hostilities erupted last week between the regime and opposition forces.
"The situation on the ground is troubling. We are monitoring it closely and will continue to work with regional partners to find a way to resolve the conflict and restore calm," she said, reiterating the US’s goal to achieve peace and security for the Syrian people.
Regarding Gaza, Thomas-Greenfield reaffirmed the US's ongoing diplomatic efforts, stating, "We continue to work toward a resolution and address the humanitarian crisis." She acknowledged the dire situation but emphasized that the US remains engaged on the ground, providing assistance to Palestinians and striving for further solutions.
On Lebanon’s recent ceasefire deal, which has already faced multiple violations by Israel, she stated, “We are moving forward. There have been some issues, but the agreement remains intact, and we are committed to ensuring the ceasefire is upheld."
For December, Thomas-Greenfield outlined the key priorities for the US presidency of the Security Council, including gender inequality, food insecurity, digital threats, and regional conflicts. She emphasized the US’s commitment to addressing these "stubborn challenges" and vowed, "Too many people depend on us for us to give up. Instead, we will roll up our sleeves and continue our efforts."
At the end of December, the presidency of the Security Council will pass from the US to Algeria.
