US deploying thousands of troops to Mexico border to manage migrant flow
The United States has initiated the deployment of a significant military presence along its southern border with Mexico, according to a statement from the US Northern Command.
The move is aimed at bolstering efforts to manage the ongoing flow of migrants crossing into the country, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
At least 10,000 US troops, supported by a substantial number of armored personnel carriers, are expected to be stationed at the border in the coming days. Their primary responsibilities will include assisting border patrol operations and constructing fortifications to strengthen security measures.
This deployment follows previous troop movements, including 1,500 National Guard members who were sent to the border earlier, and an earlier contingent of 2,500 military personnel. The buildup of forces highlights the escalating efforts to address what has been described as a growing migrant crisis along the US-Mexico border.
In addition to the military deployments, the administration of President Donald Trump has intensified its immigration enforcement efforts. Last week, the US began utilizing C-17 and C-130 military transport aircraft to deport illegal immigrants to Mexico and Guatemala as part of a broader strategy to curb illegal immigration.
Several thousand illegal immigrants were deported from the United States to Mexico by both land and air, as part of the ongoing efforts to manage migration and enforce immigration laws along the US-Mexico border.
Meanwhile, the Colombian government has reached an agreement with the Trump administration to accept flights carrying deported migrants from the US. In return, Colombia has secured a waiver from the US, avoiding the imposition of tariffs and sanctions that had been prepared in response to the country’s earlier refusal to accept deported migrants.
The agreement stipulates that Colombia will accept all illegal migrants being deported from the United States without restrictions. The Trump administration’s press office confirmed that Colombia had agreed to all of President Trump's conditions, including the unrestricted acceptance of migrants from Colombia. As a result, the tariffs, sanctions, and other punitive measures that had been under consideration will not be imposed, provided Colombia adheres to the terms of the agreement.
Previously, President Trump had directed his administration to prepare a series of harsh measures, including a 25 per cent tariff on Colombian goods, an entry ban for Colombian government officials, the cancellation of visas for these officials and their family members, increased customs controls, and other restrictive actions. These measures were set to take effect after Colombia's refusal to accept two flights of deported migrants.
However, with the newly signed agreement, Colombia has avoided these penalties, marking a significant diplomatic concession for both sides. The US now expects full cooperation from Colombia in the deportation process, further solidifying the Trump administration’s hardline stance on immigration enforcement.
