The rotational presidency of the Security Council is soon to pass to the United States, and traditionally, sessions are led by the country’s ambassador or a senior government official. This time, for the first time, the session will be presided over by the spouse of the sitting US president.
The First Lady’s office clarified that her remarks will focus on the role of education in promoting tolerance and global peace.
Under her leadership, Council members will discuss education, technology, and issues of peace and security. International media note that this marks the first time a spouse of a sitting world leader will chair a 15-member Security Council session.
