US, Iran weigh phased Hormuz reopening with demining plan at its core
The United States and Iran are reportedly discussing a phased plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategic energy corridors, approximately 30 days after a formal agreement to end hostilities is reached.
The proposed arrangement would see Iran carry out demining operations in the waterway during the 30-day transition period following the ceasefire agreement, Nikkei reports.
Once completed, commercial and military vessels from all countries would be permitted to transit freely and safely, restoring conditions similar to those prior to the de facto closure of the strait.
Under the reported framework, Iran would not impose transit fees on shipping passing through the passage.
The ceasefire, initially agreed in early April, is also said to be extended for an additional 60 days.
