US senator calls Iran ceasefire “disastrous”
US Senator Chris Murphy described the terms of the US-Iran ceasefire as a disaster during a CNN broadcast.
Murphy said that if the agreement grants Iran control over the Strait of Hormuz, it is catastrophic for the world, adding that it is astonishing that Donald Trump’s military actions apparently gave Iran control over a key waterway that it did not have before the conflict began.
He also accused the US president of consistent dishonesty and expressed doubts about the actual terms of the ceasefire, which are presented differently by Washington and Tehran.
Earlier, President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran, stating that the agreement includes Iran’s reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. He claimed that all objectives of the military operation against Iran had been achieved. The White House said Israel would join the ceasefire.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council described the United States as having suffered an undeniable, historic, and crushing defeat in the war. According to the council, the two-week ceasefire agreement requires US forces to withdraw from all bases in the Middle East, lift all sanctions, unfreeze Iranian assets abroad, and pay compensation to Iran, while Tehran will ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
