US senator urges continued assistance to Ukraine, slams Trump’s aid pause Pulling Plug Would Be Worse Than Afghanistan
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) expressed grave concerns regarding the potential consequences of halting US aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia, saying If we pull the plug, it’d be worse than Afghanistan
Graham emphasized the risks of suspending military and intelligence support as long as the fighting persists, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
“Yeah, I am worried about cutting off intelligence and weapons to Ukraine as long as the fighting is going on,” Graham stated.
“If we pull the plug on Ukraine, it’d be worse than Afghanistan. I don’t think President Trump has any desire to do that,” he added, stressing the importance of continued support until a ceasefire is achieved.
Graham’s remarks come amid ongoing debate over US policy toward Ukraine. He has been critical of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s handling of an earlier Oval Office meeting with President Donald Trump and Vice President Vance.
During the meeting, Zelenskyy pressed the American leaders on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s track record of violating ceasefire agreements. In response, Trump and Vance reportedly chastised Zelenskyy, accusing him of ingratitude for US assistance. The heated exchange was televised and led to a temporary suspension of talks regarding a potential US deal to access Ukraine’s rare earth minerals.
The aftermath of this meeting also saw Trump pause US military and intelligence assistance to Ukraine, prompting concerns among Republican lawmakers about the strategic implications of such a decision. Many are urging the president to reconsider his stance on halting aid.
In response, Graham announced that he plans to introduce new legislation aimed at pressuring Russia to engage in ceasefire and peace talks. “In terms of Russia, I will be introducing sanctions on their banking sector and on their energy sector next week, urging them to get to the table if they don’t engage in ceasefire and peace talks with the administration. We should sanction the hell out of them. And I’ll have legislation to do that next week,” Graham declared.
