Consultations between the foreign and defence ministers of Japan and the US on nuclear deterrence are scheduled to take place in Tokyo by the end of July 2024.
These talks aim to solidify strategic cooperation and underline Washington's unwavering commitment to safeguarding Japan through all available means.
The forthcoming document is anticipated to outline specific areas of military support that the US will provide to Japan under various scenarios. It will also detail the US strategy for responding to potential aggressors in case of an attack on Japan. The document is slated for adoption by the year's end.
Since 2010, discussions between the US and Japanese foreign and defence ministries on deterrence issues have been ongoing. The objective has been to underscore Washington's steadfast dedication to ensuring Japan's security amidst regional and global challenges.
This development underscores a deepening alliance between the US and Japan in the face of evolving security threats, reinforcing mutual defense commitments in the Asia-Pacific region.
Beyond security ties, the US and Japan are major economic partners. Japan is one of the largest foreign investors in the United States, while the US is Japan's second-largest trading partner after China. Bilateral trade and investment have contributed significantly to both countries' economies, with cooperation in technology, automotive industries, and finance being particularly notable.
The US-Japan alliance is pivotal for regional security in the Asia-Pacific. The presence of US military bases in Japan, including on Okinawa, underscores their joint commitment to maintaining stability and deterring potential threats in the region. Joint military exercises and intelligence sharing are routine, aimed at enhancing interoperability and readiness.
