Uzbekistan ranks among world’s top ten cotton producers
Uzbekistan remains a notable player in the global cotton market, producing around 600,000 tons of raw cotton annually. This represents approximately 2% of global output and places the country among the world’s top ten producers, despite a significant gap with leading nations.
Global cotton production is concentrated in a limited number of countries. China leads the ranking with about 7.7 million tons, or roughly 29% of global output, supported by advanced agricultural practices and strong domestic demand. India follows in second place with approximately 5.1 million tons (19%), though its production is heavily dependent on weather conditions.
Brazil produces around 4.2 million tons (16%) and continues to strengthen its position through improved efficiency and expanding exports. The United States, with about 3 million tons (12%), remains the largest exporter of cotton on international markets, despite ongoing exposure to climatic risks.
Other major producers include Pakistan (around 1.1 million tons), Australia (approximately 1 million tons), and Türkiye (about 0.7 million tons). Uzbekistan, with roughly 0.6 million tons, is continuing reforms in the sector, focusing on harvest mechanization, production modernization, and the expansion of processing industries, which is increasing the added value of its output.
Experts note that the concentration of production in a small number of countries enhances their influence over global pricing and trade flows.
