Venezuela enacts historic amnesty law to foster political coexistence
In an official ceremony at the Palacio de Miraflores, Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez Gómez, signed the Law of Amnesty for Democratic Coexistence on February 19 evening. The measure, which aims to mark a milestone in the country’s political landscape, had been approved unanimously by the Asamblea Nacional (National Assembly).
The initiative, personally championed by Rodríguez, was first announced on January 30 during the opening of the 2026 Judicial Year.
During the signing ceremony, Rodríguez praised the work of lawmakers, stating that what they carried to the chamber was “not merely a stack of papers, but hope for Venezuela.” She described the law’s approval as “an act of greatness and personal and collective selflessness.”
“Each of us who has taken part in political life over the past 25 years is letting go a little of intolerance and opening new avenues for politics in Venezuela,” she said.
Rodríguez also welcomed the presence of a broad spectrum of political actors at Miraflores and stressed that the law reflects “a profound process of reflection encompassing all sectors.”
“We are taking this important step to show Venezuela and the world what we are capable of,” she concluded.
