Vučić: “I’m gradually moving my things out” ahead of resignation
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has said he will step down from office shortly after setting a date for parliamentary elections, outlining a transition that could see him return to frontline politics as a prime ministerial candidate.
In an interview with TV Pink, cited by Danas, Vučić said he would fulfil his constitutional duty to call elections before resigning days later.
“I’m gradually moving my things out. As President of the Republic, I must call parliamentary elections; then a few days will pass, and I will resign,” he said.
Vučić also dismissed the strength of his political opponents, arguing they have overstated their support. While they previously claimed backing from 70% of voters, he said the real question now is whether they “have even 30%.”
The Serbian leader recently reiterated his intention to resign in an address to parliament, telling lawmakers he was speaking “perhaps for the last time” as president and describing the period as his “last days and weeks in office.”
On June 27, Vučić said he would step down “in a few weeks” and pledged to assist the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in securing victory in the parliamentary elections with a list named “United Serbia.”
Milos Vucevic, chairman of the SNS, later said the party expects Vucic to head its electoral list and run as its candidate for prime minister.
