West seeks alternatives to Anthropic AI after US restrictions

15 June 2026 09:57

After the United States decided to restrict foreign companies’ access to Anthropic’s latest models in Europe and Canada, calls have intensified across Western countries to accelerate the development of domestic artificial intelligence systems in order to reduce dependence on foreign technologies, Bloomberg reports.

The outlet said Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned that the situation surrounding the Mythos and Fable models highlighted the risks of excessive concentration in access to advanced AI technologies.

“The situation we’re in collectively right now with Mythos and Fable is something that can happen with over-reliance on certain models,” he said, adding that no one did anything wrong in this situation.

Carney also noted that cooperation between Canada and the United States in artificial intelligence remains effective, and that both sides had been able to identify a number of potential risks associated with Anthropic’s latest developments.

The issue of artificial intelligence is expected to be one of the key topics at the upcoming G7 summit scheduled for June 15–17. The event is expected to include participation by Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Carney stressed that they needed to make progress in the field of AI, adding that no immediate decisions are expected from the summit.

Reuters reported that the US Commerce Department’s decision has sent another signal to Europe about its heavy dependence on American AI models.

Against this backdrop, European politicians have called for accelerating the development of domestic technologies.

According to French far-right leader Jordan Bardella, this sudden decision reminds them that artificial intelligence has already become a serious issue of national sovereignty.

He added that countries that fail to rapidly develop their own AI models will become increasingly dependent on external powers.

European Parliament member Aura Salla said Europe can no longer build its technological infrastructure on access that could be restricted at any moment by a foreign government.

Meanwhile, fellow MEP Eva Maydell called for defining clear directions for the development of Europe’s own technological and strategic capabilities.

Reuters also highlighted French AI company Mistral AI, which is reportedly in talks to raise €3 billion in funding at an estimated valuation of around €20 billion.
