Formula One Grand Prix of Azerbaijan may have two qualifications

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix of Formula One will try out a new format for the race weekend in a month.

The leadership of the championship wants to conduct a separate qualification for the short race on April 1, Report informs with reference to the German edition Auto Motor und Sport.

It is proposed that one qualification will determine the starting grid for Sunday's race, the second - for the sprint, and this race will take place instead of the second practice on Saturday morning. It has not yet been decided in what form the second qualification will take place. One option is the one-round format.

Rescheduling the weekend will require unanimous support from the teams. However, the main problem lies elsewhere - the leadership of the championship and the participants will need to redistribute the number of tires for the weekend, the elements of the power plant, and revise the rules of the closed fleet.

Pirelli doesn't want to give each rider more than 12 sets of tires per round.

Pirelli racing director Mario Isola said that the delivery of tires is agreed in advance and all sets of tires for the participants of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix have already been sent to Baku. There are currently several options for solving the problem.

It should be noted that the Azerbaijan Grand Prix will be held on April 28-30 in Baku.
