Polish PM: Ukraine fighting for NATO's interests, deserves shortcut to Alliance

05 June 2023 10:56

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said that Ukraine fights in the interests of NATO against Russian imperialism, which threatens the allies, and therefore deserves to be part of the Alliance.

"Even if Ukraine is not part of NATO today, it is fighting in its interests in the sense that it defends against a brutal Russian force that would threaten many NATO countries," he said in an interview with Canada's CBS channel, PAP reported.

"I believe that Ukraine deserves to be offered a very fast track to NATO," the Polish prime minister said.

In his opinion, this issue is now more important than certain problems of Ukrainian statehood.

Morawiecki also called on Western European countries distant from Russia territorially to be more favourable to Ukraine.

Ukraine is reportedly seeking membership in the North Atlantic Alliance within a short time after achieving a military victory over Russia and is seeking such a guarantee at the NATO summit in Vilnius.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier said that he understood that it was impossible for Ukraine to join NATO during the war, but he saw no point in attending the NATO summit in Vilnius unless Ukraine received specific signals as to when it might join the Alliance as a result.
