Pashinyan calls Armenian church historical “agent of influence”
REGION 22 May 2024 - 21:08
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has accused the Armenian Apostolic Church of historically acting as an "agent of influence," referencing recent "Tavush for the Motherland" revanchist rallies led by Archbishop Bagrat.
"The Armenian people have experience of being under the rule of the empire. They went to Caesarea for anointing, then returned to Armenia and became agents of influence," Pashinyan stated, alluding to the ordination of Armenian Catholicos in Caesarea by the Byzantine Church during the 4th century AD, Caliber.Az reports citing Armenian media.
Pashinyan cited King Pap's failed attempt to sever these ties, noting that Pap was assassinated shortly thereafter. However, the Prime Minister expressed his determination to complete this historical mission within the next few months, ensuring the church no longer serves as an agent of influence.
"King Pap will no longer be assassinated," Pashinyan asserted, using metaphorical language to emphasize that Armenian statehood will be preserved and strengthened against external influences.
