Hungary rejects support for Ursula von der Leyen's re-election as EC chief

    WORLD  28 May 2024 - 13:00

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced in Târgu-Mures, Romania, that Hungary would not support Ursula von der Leyen's re-election as head of the European Commission, TASS reports via Agerpres.

"We will not lend our support to Ursula von der Leyen," Szijjártó stated. "In the past five years, Europe has faced continual crises under the leadership of the European Commission, which has failed to resolve them. The Commission's actions have only exacerbated the situation, leading to a decline in the quality of life for European citizens."

Szijjártó criticized the Commission's handling of issues, noting that the EU was more competitive five years ago and that the current escalation of conflicts, such as the war, has worsened under its watch. He emphasized the Commission's overreach of powers and its transformation into a political decision-making body, attributing responsibility for Europe's recent turmoil to its actions.

Speaking at a forum in Târgu-Mures Cultural Palace, Szijjártó's sentiments were echoed by Kelemen Hunor, leader of the Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania, who revealed that their party also did not support von der Leyen's candidacy at the European People's Party congress held in Bucharest in March.
