Armenian FM: Opening of transport routes in South Caucasus to contribute to peace

    REGION  02 July 2024 - 10:30

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has stated that the opening of transport routes in the South Caucasus will enhance peace and stability.

Mirzoyan made these remarks at a meeting with Secretary General of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organisation (BSEC) Lazar Comanescu in Yerevan, Caliber.Az reports citing the Armenian media.

Mirzoyan noted that the South Caucasus will be integrated into the global transport network through these regional routes.

He expressed Armenia's high expectations for the BSEC, viewing it as a crucial platform for regional integration and cooperation.

"These issues will be a priority for the Armenian presidency," Mirzoyan added.

Comanescu's visit marks the beginning of Armenia's chairmanship of the organisation since July 1, 2024.

The Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organisation (BSEC) was established in Istanbul, Türkiye on June 25, 1992. The founding members aimed to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Black Sea region through enhanced economic cooperation and integration among member states.

BSEC comprises 13 member countries, which are:

    1. Albania
    2. Armenia
    3. Azerbaijan
    4. Bulgaria
    5. Georgia
    6. Greece
    7. Moldova
    8. North Macedonia
    9. Romania
    10. Russia
    11. Serbia
    12. Türkiye
    13. Ukraine

These countries span a diverse and geopolitically significant region connecting Europe and Asia, encompassing the Black Sea, the Balkans, and the Caucasus.

BSEC aims to foster collaboration in several key areas:

    - Trade and Economic Development: Enhancing trade and investment among member states to stimulate economic growth and development.

    - Transport and Communication: Improving regional transport networks and communication infrastructures to facilitate better connectivity.

    - Energy: Promoting energy security and cooperation, including the development of renewable energy sources.

    - Tourism: Encouraging tourism within the region to boost economic activity and cultural exchange.

    - Environmental Protection: Addressing environmental issues, including the protection of the Black Sea and sustainable development practices.

    - Education and Science: Promoting educational and scientific cooperation to advance knowledge and innovation.

BSEC faces several challenges, including geopolitical tensions among member states, economic disparities, and environmental concerns. However, the organisation also has significant opportunities to enhance regional cooperation, leverage its strategic location, and promote sustainable economic growth.

The Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organisation remains a vital platform for fostering regional collaboration and addressing common challenges in the Black Sea region. Through its diverse initiatives and cooperative framework, BSEC aims to enhance economic stability, connectivity, and prosperity among its member states.
