Armenia prepares response to Baku's peace treaty proposals

Armenian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Ani Badalyan has said that Armenia is preparing a reciprocal package of proposals on the peace treaty with Azerbaijan.

"Armenia's reciprocal peace treaty proposals are under preparation. Armenia is ready to sign the agreement as soon as possible in accordance with the principle provisions already voiced and presented," Badalyan told Armenian media, Caliber.Az reports.

Armenia received the 10th package of proposals regarding the draft peace treaty from Azerbaijan in June.

Despite the successful demarcation of a 12.7-kilometre section of the border along four Azerbaijani villages in April, Azerbaijan and Armenia have yet to reach a consensus on other major issues such as the reopening of transport communications.

On July 1, President Aliyev mentioned that the text of a peace treaty, or at least basic principles, could be finalized within a few months, emphasizing that the signing of peace hinges on Armenia amending its constitution.

Azerbaijan has consistently urged Armenia to remove references in its constitution to the 1990 Declaration of Independence, which cites the illegal act of 1989 on the unification of Soviet Armenia and the then Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region of Azerbaijan.
