40 killed in northern Türkiye mine blast

The death toll in a coal mine accident in Türkiye's Amasra district in the province of Bartın has risen to 40.

The latest data on the accident was shared with the public by Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, Anadolu Agency reported.

According to him, the fate of only one miner is unknown.

"We are doing our best to help the 11 injured. Six of them are being treated in Istanbul, five are in Bartın," Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca wrote on social media.

The explosion at a mine in the Amasra district took place on October 14 at 6.15 pm local time.

There were 110 people working in the mine at the time of the explosion.

Fifty-eight people were rescued.

Air ambulance services were deployed to provide emergency aid to the injured.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan cancelled all of Saturday's events, saying he would soon visit the emergency area.

The Bartin provincial prosecutor's office opened a criminal investigation into the mine explosion.
