Al Jazeera: US and Iran exchange messages via Egypt, Türkiye
The United States and Iran have exchanged messages aimed at de-escalating tensions, with mediation efforts led by Egypt and Türkiye, according to Al Jazeera.
Citing a senior Iranian official, the broadcaster reported that the indirect contacts focused on reducing hostilities between Washington and Tehran amid heightened regional strains.
The official said, however, that Washington has so far refused to meet Tehran’s key demands, including compensation payments and what Iran describes as formal recognition of “aggression” against it.
He added that Donald Trump does not have the authority to dictate the terms or timeline of any potential negotiations.
The Iranian official also warned that the possibility of closing the Strait of Hormuz, as well as deploying naval mines, remains under consideration in response to any “reckless actions” by the United States.
