Ambassador: Kazakhstan to play key role at COP29 in Baku
Kazakhstan is set to play an active role in the COP29 climate conference, scheduled to take place in Baku this November.
Alim Bayel, Kazakhstan's ambassador to Azerbaijan, announced the intention during the Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan tourism forum held at the embassy, Caliber.Az reports citing local media.
He emphasized the strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, underpinned by strong political dialogue between their leaders.
Bayel highlighted the significant tourism exchange between the two nations, noting that Kazakhstan was the source of nearly half of all Central Asian tourists visiting Azerbaijan in 2023. He reported that 58,000 Kazakh tourists visited Azerbaijan last year, with over 38,000 already arriving between January and June 2024. Kazakhstan ranks third in terms of growth in tourist flow to Azerbaijan, following China and India.
In November, Azerbaijan will host COP29, a decision finalized during the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11, 2023. Baku is set to become the global focal point, expecting to welcome approximately 70,000 to 80,000 international guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to mitigate human interference with the climate system. The Conference of the Parties (COP), comprising 198 member countries, serves as the supreme body overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC. Unless agreed otherwise, COP meetings are held annually, with the inaugural event occurring in March 1995 in Berlin and the secretariat based in Bonn.
