Azerbaijan's top lawmaker nominated to lead global parliamentary body

Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (Parliament), Sahiba Gafarova, has been nominated for the position of Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Gafarova announced her candidacy during an event in Belgrade marking the 65th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), Caliber.Az reports per local media.

“It is a great honor for me to be nominated for a leadership position in the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The elections will be held in October this year in Tanzania, alongside the Assembly,” she said.

Speaker Gafarova added that, if elected, she would consider it a privilege to serve in the position with the involvement and support of representatives from NAM member states.

In her address, the parliamentary speaker highlighted the importance of commemorating the 65th anniversary of the NAM’s establishment and honoring the legacy of its founding leaders.

“We must remember the founders, pay tribute to them, and continue to carry their legacy into the future. Their principles are the key to our future. Our collective responsibility is to preserve the unity of the Movement, strengthen its voice, and enhance its contribution to peace, sustainable development, and a fairer, more equal international order,” Gafarova stressed.
