Argentina’s Milei rocks out at book event amid economic backlash
Argentine President Javier Milei has sparked controversy after turning the presentation of his new book into a rock concert.
The event thrilled his supporters but drew sharp criticism from the opposition, which accused him of ignoring the country’s deepening economic problems, Caliber.Az reports, citing CNN.
Milei performed nine rock covers, including “Demoliendo Hoteles” by Charly García and “Libre” by Nino Bravo — songs associated with resistance to oppression and references to Argentina’s last military dictatorship and Franco’s regime in Spain.
Javier Milei, an economist and former TV pundit, became Argentina’s president in December 2023 after winning the election on a platform of radical economic liberalism and anti-establishment rhetoric. Known for his eccentric personality and libertarian ideals, Milei has promoted drastic cuts to public spending and the abolition of Argentina’s central bank.
His presidency has been marked by sharp inflation, sweeping austerity measures, and highly polarising public appearances.
