Armed assault hits vessel in Gulf of Aden, UK maritime centre confirms
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre (UKMTO) announced an armed attack on a vessel in the Gulf of Aden.
The incident occurred approximately 70 nautical miles southwest of Aden, Yemen, Caliber.Az reports.
“A vessel was approached and hailed by one white skiff, with five persons onboard. This was followed by an exchange of small arms fire. Two additional skiffs were also reported in the vicinity. Authorities are investigating. Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO,” the agency said.
UKMTO is a Royal Navy‑linked centre that acts as a central reporting and information hub for merchant shipping operating in high‑risk waters such as the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea, facilitating communication between civilian vessels and military forces to enhance maritime safety.
It operates around the clock from its Maritime Trade Information Centre near Portsmouth, UK, with liaison support in Dubai, and promotes a voluntary reporting scheme for vessels transiting its designated area to improve situational awareness and risk management.
Though focused historically on piracy threats, its role has broadened to provide timely security alerts, advisories and reassurance to all mariners regardless of nationality.
