Armed attack on Azerbaijani embassy prompts other countries' diplomatic corps in Iran to close down

30 January 2023 12:59

The Azerbaijani embassy may not be the only diplomatic mission to leave Iran.

According to Trend, following the January 27 attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran, and amid explosions and rocket attacks in the country, some states may decide to suspend the activities of their diplomatic missions in Iran.

Embassies of some countries in Iran are already considering the option of evacuating their staff through the territory of Azerbaijan.

It should be noted that on January 27, 2023, at about 8:30 am (GMT+4) a terrorist attack was carried out against the Azerbaijani Embassy in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The attacker opened fire with an assault rifle at the guard post, killing the head of security and wounding two embassy guards. An investigation into the attack is underway.

On January 29, at about 22:00 local time the plane with the evacuated employees of the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran landed in Baku. The body of Orkhan Asgarov, who died in the attack on the embassy, was also taken to Baku.

Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov told reporters on January 29 that the diplomatic activities of Azerbaijan's embassy in Iran have been completely suspended.

"Five people will remain at the embassy to guard the administrative building and the property of the diplomatic mission, but they will not carry out diplomatic activities," the deputy minister added.

Khalafov also noted that the decision to suspend the activities of the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran does not apply to the work of the consulate general in Tabriz.
