Armenia arrests Gyumri mayor’s aide, puts another official under house arrest
In Armenia, the detained Gyumri city hall official has been arrested, while another has been placed under house arrest.
Mayor Vardan Gukasyan’s advisor, Karapet Gukasyan, has been taken into custody, while Artem Mkrtchyan, the head of the municipal department, has been placed under house arrest, bail, removal from office, and a travel ban, Caliber.Az reports per Armenian media.
The Armenian Investigative Committee previously said that criminal proceedings have been initiated against four people over the mass unrest in Gyumri, two of whom were already detained.
To recall, on October 21, Vardan Gukasyan, the mayor of the city, was detained for two months.
He has been charged with “accepting bribes,” but he does not admit his guilt. According to his defence, almost all of the incidents cited in the charges occurred between December 2024 and February 2025, when Gukasyan was not serving as mayor.
