Armenia clarifies EAEU summit location decision ahead of December meeting
The Armenian Foreign Ministry clarified that the decision to hold the upcoming meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council (EAEU) on December 25 in St. Petersburg was made back in May during a session in Moscow, with the agreement of all member states.
In response to a request from 24News for a comment on a statement made by Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, who claimed the meeting would be held in St. Petersburg at Armenia's request, the Ministry explained that the current EAEU regulations do not mandate that a summit be held in the country holding the rotating presidency, Caliber.Az reports.
“According to the current EAEU regulations, it is not stipulated that the summit of the Eurasian Economic Council must necessarily be held on the territory of the country presiding over the statutory bodies of the EAEU. Therefore, the decision on the timing and location of the next meeting is made during the previous summit. In this case, during the session held on May 8 in Moscow, the heads of state decided to hold the next meeting in December of this year in St. Petersburg,” the Armenian ministry stated in its response.
This clarification comes after Russia's assertion that Armenia had requested St. Petersburg as the venue for the summit.
