Türkiye, UK call for ceasefire in Russia-Ukraine war, Middle East conflicts

30 June 2025 16:56

Türkiye and the United Kingdom support efforts to achieve a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, said Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan following talks in Ankara with his British counterpart David Lammy.

“Our views on the issues of Gaza, Syria, Iran, Iraq, and the war between Russia and Ukraine largely coincide. Both sides support efforts to achieve a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine,” Fidan said, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.

According to him, one of the strategic objectives for both countries is to maintain the ceasefire between Iran and Israel, “to prevent its violation and return to lasting peace.”

“On the other hand, for us it is important to end the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza as soon as possible,” Fidan said, adding that a resolution of the Palestinian issue can only be achieved on the basis of a two-state coexistence.

The Russia-Ukraine war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, has caused significant loss of life, displacement, and economic disruption. By June 2025, the conflict remains unresolved, with intermittent ceasefire talks mediated by various actors, including Türkiye, which has positioned itself as a key neutral broker.

Türkiye’s support for a ceasefire aligns with its broader foreign policy of balancing relations with both Russia and Ukraine. As a NATO member with strong ties to Ukraine, Türkiye has supplied military aid, including Bayraktar TB2 drones, while maintaining economic and energy cooperation with Russia.

Ankara has also consistently advocated for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a position echoed by the UK, which supports Palestinian statehood as part of a negotiated peace process. The Gaza conflict, intensified by Israel’s response to Hamas-led attacks, remains a focal point for both countries, with Türkiye particularly vocal about the need for humanitarian aid and an end to hostilities.
