Armenia fights with draft evaders Prosecution and draconian fines

10 July 2023 15:38

Courts in Armenia are sentencing those who evaded military training to heavy fines, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

Thus, Armenian citizen Radik Sarukhanyan was charged with the fact that he, being a reservist of the first group of junior sergeants, was obliged to participate in the period from August 1 to October 30, 2022, in military training, which was announced by the governmental decree No. 941 dated June 23 .2022.

Sarukhanyan received a notification and a referral for a medical examination, after which he was declared fit for training.

During the judicial investigation, it was established that on August 1, 2022, Sarukhanyan did not appear at the territorial military registration and enlistment office of the Lori region, thereby avoiding participation in military training.

“As a result, Sarukhanyan was found guilty of committing an act under part 1 of Article 462 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia and sentenced to a fine of 476,000 drams ($1,245 – ed.), which is seven times the minimum wage,” reads the statement.
