02 February 2026 18:38
Kazakhstan has approved the construction of a second nuclear power plant in the southern part of the country.
The decision was formalized through a government decree signed by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov, Caliber.Az reports, citing Kazakh media.
“The nuclear power plant will be built in the southwest of the Almaty region, in the Zhambyl district,” the document states.
Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant is currently under construction by Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy company Rosatom near the settlement of Ulken on the shores of Lake Balkhash.
