Armenia, Latvia sign protocol on return of illegal migrants

07 September 2026 18:53

Armenian Foreign Minister and Minister of International Trade Ararat Mirzoyan and Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže have signed a protocol on the return of illegal migrants.

The protocol provides for the implementation of the Agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Armenia on the Readmission of Persons Residing Without Authorisation, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

Latvia is stepping up security along its eastern border as irregular migration, drone incursions and threats from Russia and Belarus increasingly converge.

Border guards are expanding surveillance while military planners build defensive infrastructure to slow a potential ground attack.

Authorities say these challenges are now part of a wider security threat facing NATO’s eastern flank.
